Fives Participates in White House Upskill Summit
The company shared knowledge about its own apprenticeship program and discussed ways such programs can be broadened in the United States to benefit semi-skilled workers.

Fives participated in the White House Upskill Summit, a national initiative launched by President Obama that calls on businesses to open opportunities for workers of all ages to get better, higher-paying jobs regardless of higher education background. Ed Bisig, director of human resources for Fives Machining Systems, attended the Arlington, Virginia, summit on behalf of the company, joining some 150 employers, labor leaders, foundations, non-profits, educators and tech experts.
Mr. Bisig participated in the apprenticeships working group in which he discussed ways to accelerate apprenticeship programs in the United States as well as broaden their reach into non-traditional fields such as healthcare. “I was very honored to participate with this group of leaders at the Upskill Summit and believe that we achieved real progress by sharing best practices toward the goals of improving career opportunities and earning power for skilled and semi-skilled workers,” he says.
Since 2005, Fives has graduated 13 apprentices and has another 11 currently in the program, seven of which will graduate in 2015.
