Available from Renishaw, RLS’s AksIM true-absolute magnetic rotary encoder is designed for embedded OEM motion-control applications. The encoder offers 18-bit resolution and zero mechanical hysteresis in a through-bore configuration. It is suitable for a range of motion control applications, including robotics, automation systems and medical equipment, the company says.
The device consists of a low-profile encoder read-head and separate magnetic ring, available in either a fully sealed IP64 housing or as a board-level encoder. The read-head supports a range of data output formats, including serial RS422, CAN, SSI, PWM, I2C, SPI and USB with binary resolutions to 18 bits per revolution and speeds as fast as 10,000 revolutions per min. According to the company, no battery backup is required, and positioning is determined immediately at power-up with a single track code embedded in a corrosion-resistant ring. An integral setup and diagnostics LED provides intuitive indication of signal heals. The read-head also includes self-monitoring functionality with the capability to report warnings, alarms and other status signals to the drive and controller via the communications interface.
