Seco Tools has released the first grade developed with its DurAtomic coating process, the TP2500, which is useful for a wide variety of applications. The company says the coating process provides this multi-function grade with both wear resistance and toughness, two characteristics that are normally diametrically opposed. The process manipulates the coating at the atomic level by altering the crystal structure of the aluminum oxide (AL2O3) layer. This produces a functionally graded substrate structure that provides edge toughness without sacrificing strength, the company says.
