Leaders-In background

Walter has created a PVD coating for its Tiger-tec cutting grades by applying aluminum oxide to its inserts, resulting in Tiger-tec cutting grades that are appropriate for multiple applications such as stainless steel, heat-resistant alloys, super- and titanium alloys and cast iron grades. Previously, aluminum oxide could only be used with CVD coatings, says the company.

The materials have been designed for use in the aerospace and power generation industries and are said to provide high speed machining of materials with difficult cutting properties. The PVD Tiger can process titanium and titanium alloys. According to the company, less chipping is produced on the cutting edges because of the degree of toughness afforded. In addition, cratering can be markedly reduced in part by the stability under high temperatures.
