To date, titanium-based coatings such as TiAlN, AlTiN or TiCN have defined the benchmark tool coatings. Now, AlCrN (aluminum chromium nitride) is added to the list. The company’s new Balnit Alcrona coating provides hot hardness and oxidation resistance. In conventional machining operations as well as in applications involving heavy mechanical and thermal stresses, these properties deliver wear resistance, which is what cutting tools need to more effectively tap the potential of modern machine tools, according to the company. The new coating is suited for dry and wet machining of unalloyed steels as well as high-strength and high-hardness (up to 54 HRC) steels.
