Mazak’s open-protocol, MTConnect-compliant SmartBox is intended to be a platform for secure entrance into the Industrial Internet of Things, designed to facilitate connectivity of machines and devices and enhance monitoring and analytical capabilities. The SmartBox is a small cabinet that can be mounted on the side of a machine enclosure, enabling direct connection with newer machine tools’ electrical cabinets. In addition, it can be connected to legacy equipment, enabling the use of off-the-shelf sensors that can then be wired to the SmartBox’s I/O rack. One box can serve several machines, depending on how it is configured. According to Mazak, the completely open-standard SmartBox works in conjunction with virtually all popular third-party analytical software platforms, including those from 5ME, Forcam, Memex, System Insights and TechSolve.
The product also introduces enhanced cyber security protection as a result of a partnership with Cisco Systems. Cisco’s contribution to the SmartBox is an industrial Ethernet 4000-series switch. The switch is said to prevent unauthorized access to and from machines and equipment on a network as well as enable real-time visibility and insights into data gathered in the shop.
