KEB America has applied the MQTT protocol to its C6 VPN industrial router. The router is used to provide secure remote access with data logging capabilities. With the addition of the protocol, the router can also be used as an IIoT gateway.
MQTT is a pub/sub messaging protocol that works on top of the TCP/IP protocol. The protocol is meant to be used in situations where a small code footprint is required and the network capabilities are limited, such as in small devices or automation systems with widely distributed components. It is designed to be simple to install and easy for personnel to learn. Its lightweight properties enable CPU resources to be used on functions other than communication.
Developers can also use cloud-based platforms to build out their MQTT applications. Logged data can be pushed to services such as Amazon’s AWS or Microsoft Azure. Machine builders and systems integrators can then perform analytics, create dashboards and measure KPIs.
The protocol also implements data security features. The router can use TLS, SSL, authentication and authorization when communicating with the broker.
