Seco Adds Grooving Chipbreakers to MDT System

Designed for grooving operations in steel, nonferrous alloys and superalloys, the Grooving Sharp (GS) and Grooving Ground (GG) chipbreakers are the latest additions to Seco Tools’ Multi-Directional Turning (MDT) program. The chip breakers feature a 10-degree, positive rake angle with a sharp 10-micron edge hone.
 
Intended primarily for nonferrous alloys, the GS geometry includes a sharp edge without any protection chamfer. In contrast, the GG geometry includes a protection chamfer from 0.1 to 0.2 mm. Aimed primarily at superalloys, the GG is also suitable for some steel applications, the company says. Both chipbreakers are designed to increase productivity by reducing cutting tool pressure and to be used as “problem solvers” in applications in which light cutting is more important than chipbreaking capability.
 
MDT is a flexible system that uses a single toolholder and insert for turning, profiling and grooving in both axial and radial directions. The toolholder’s clamping action is said to provide a rigid and stable contact surface that is several times stronger than that of other systems. Additionally, MDT is versatile enough to improve productivity by reducing tool changes and machine stops, the company says. The system also simplifies tool handling and stocking requirements by replacing the need for several conventional tools.
