Leaders-In background
Lightweight, carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer materials, which are prevalent in the aerospace industry, tend to delaminate when being processed, particularly when drilling holes. Kennametal Inc. offers the Split-Point Fiber Drill, with a lessened cutting force, as a way to reduce or eliminate this delamination. The drill’s smooth, CVD multi-layer diamond coating provides wear resistance and reduces friction, which can increase tool life and improve chip flow. According to the company, point thinning increases centering capability and allows reduced thrust, thereby improving hole quality. The drill is available in 24 different standard diameters, with standard lengths equal to 3X and 5X the diameter.
