Fives Cincinnati’s modular Precision Mill/Trim (PMT) five-axis gantry machine tool is designed for high-speed multiprocessing of large nonferrous components such as composite structures, aluminum skins, molds and patterns. In addition to performing milling, drilling and trimming operations, the machine is capable of using various special heads including waterjet, finishing tools and a system for precise control of countersink depth.
The machining center features an unlimited X axis; configurable Y axis ranging from 2 to 6 m; and Z axis of 1, 1.5 or 2 m. Feed rates range to 60 m/min. The compact dual-axis rotary spindle head is driven by direct-drive torque motors with encoder feedback to provide 220 degrees of A-axis title and 550 degrees of C-axis rotation. Options are available for additional or continuous C-axis rotation. Several versions of motorized spindles are available, ranging from 20 kW, 24,000 rpm to 42 kW, 30,000 rpm. The spindles also feature an HSK A63 tool interface. The machine can be equipped with a Siemens 840sl or FANUC 31i CNC.
The rail-type configuration enables adaptation of a range of workholding systems, including Fives’ Flexitool universal workholding system consisting of modular table sections equipped with programmable vertical actuators and swiveling vacuum end effectors to accommodate almost any workpiece shape. Options include waterjet cutting head, coolant supply and filtration systems, mist and dust collection systems, video monitoring, probing, a retractable roof enclosure, X-Y-Z way covers, and a high-efficiency vacuum system for source-capture of cutting debris.
